Julia Hahn

Julia Hahn, Orange County Arts and Disability

Julia Hahn  graduated from Immaculata University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Music Therapy.  She currently is a Board-Certified Music Therapist with the American Music Therapy Association.  She holds a California K-12 Single Subject Music teaching credential and a Severely Handicapped Specialist Credential, which she cleared at California State University, Fullerton. She has worked in private schools and state facilities as a music therapist.

Hahn recently retired from Hope School in the Anaheim Union High School District.  Although a Special Education teacher, Hahn provided a general music and choral program for students with Intellectual Disabilities.  Following the general music curriculum and introducing the elements and music and choral practices in line with the state standards, the program is therapeutically based.  Using music and musical instruction to change behavior in many areas, Hahn worked to include her students with typical peers in the general musical curriculum.

Hahn is the co-founder of the Visual and Performing Arts cross-curricular project, The Pageant of Hope.  Hahn has served on the AUHSD Superintendent’s Advisory Council and was the Junior High Department Chair at Hope School. She has also served on the VSA California Planning Committee with the Orange County Department of Education.  In addition to the National Advisory Board for United Sound, Hahn serves on the Advisory Board for Orange County Arts and Disability (formerly VSA Orange County). Hahn has been named the Anaheim Union High School District Teacher of the Year and has been recognized by the Council for Exception Children. Hahn was the first recipient the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators’ Award Teacher of the Year for Special Education in 2008.   She was honored to receive the Phyllis Berenbeim Arts in Special Education Award in 2021. Hahn has presented at the California All State Music Education Conference, mentors educators on arts access for students with disabilities and is an advocate for visual and performing arts experiences for the disabled.
